FACTS ABOUT AUDIO DESCRIPTION (AD) AND VIEW VIA HEADPHONES

WHAT IS "VIEW VIA HEADPHONES (VVH)"?
VVH provides Audio Description (AD) service within the Centre Region, including at town and campus theatres, galleries and more. AD is the art of talking pictorially to describe the visual elements of a performance, movie, exhibition, etc. This may also include program notes before the event and during intermission. In general, the AD does NOT occur at the same time as the audible elements of an event.
HOW DOES AD WORK?
Professionally trained audio describers work during the live event. Their description is broadcast only to AD patrons who receive the signal through hand held, palm-sized receivers with small earpieces. The patron controls the volume and may even choose to turn the receiver off at times. Why not try it?
WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM AD?
AD benefits anyone who has trouble seeing the details at an event. Can you see facial expressions, hand gestures, costume and staging details? If not, then AD may increase your enjoyment of the theatre, etc. AD has also been shown to be beneficial for people with learning disabilities, as it offers information in a variety of ways. Of course, it is also appropriate for adults and children with sight loss.
DOES AD COST ANYTHING?
No. VVH offers AD free of charge. VVH is currently funded through grants.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT EVENTS ARE BREING AUDIO DESCRIBED?
Look for the universal AD logo in advertisements and programs. Ask for AD when you reserve tickets–the more demand, the better. Join the Sight-Loss Support Group of Central PA, Inc., and receive our monthly newsletter which includes local AD program information. A membership form is printed on the back of this brochure. Send to the address below.
HOW CAN I HELP?
Try AD next time it is available; tell your friends and family. Donations to the Sight-Loss Support Group of Central Pa, Inc. (memo “View Via Headphones”) would be appreciated.
